Fugitive emissions from oil and gas operations represent one of the fastest-payback abatement opportunities globally. In Africa, the challenge is not technology availability but measurement consistency and institutional capacity.

AMCoP's energy working group is piloting a harmonised MRV template that aligns with both the Global Methane Pledge reporting requirements and national NDC frameworks. Early adopters in East and West Africa are testing satellite-derived leak maps against field surveys.

The investment case is clear: LDAR programmes typically pay back within 12-18 months when gas recovery is factored in. What remains is building the data infrastructure and policy signals that unlock private capital.
